What is Physical Education (PE)? A simple activity on how we can change and improve our students thoughts on PE.
Physical Education can have different definitions to many students, but as educators we must ensure the correct definition is taught and promoted within our schools.
After having discussions with a few PE teachers through Voxer it was very interesting to hear that some students aren't aware of what Physical Education is. The common theme through our discussion was, dodgeball and the common question through our students voices were "When are we playing dodgeball?" This was frightening to hear that all students wanted to do was to play this game (which is a whole new discussion should dodgeball be allowed to play in schools.)
So what needs done? How do we change the culture of students thoughts of what Physical Education means?
First question/s - What does Physical Education mean? How do we teach Physical Education? This is something that can't be learnt overnight or during four years at university, this is ongoing and we learn new tactics, strategies and thoughts on how to teach Physical Education every day.
Something that I did with my students was breaking down the meaning of PE. An example below is what we did. The students require support to create this mind map, however it was great to complete, as it opened the students minds even more about what PE is and what is expected at their level. The mind map could of been extended even more if we had the time to break down each component, this is something could be done when teaching a particular unit.
Give students the layout of what they'll be learning over the next 4-5 weeks so they can prepare themselves. As educators we need to understand some students require that extra notice in what they'll be learning.
From here once students are aware of their topic/s goal setting can be achieved for students and students can work at their own pace with directions to achieve their goal.
Don't exclude the fun games, absolutely not, however we need to make sure we are teaching Physical Education for the right reason/s and to ensure we lead students to an active and healthy life. I believe no one is perfect in the area of PE, but there are so many passionate teachers out there that can assist you if needed to clarify on how to teach various units. Once students head to high school, university, TAFE etc these students will then be making their own choices in regards to physical activity and the importance of it.
I am very please this discussion came about with my students then came about with other teachers. This is the challenge that we have with our students, a challenge that will be very rewarding at the end.
These are my own opinions and experiences. I love to share and reflect.
